Red Hill, northwest of Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, is the heart of Tibetan Buddhism, such as Mt Putuo home to Bodhisattva. It is therefore plain Potala (Putuo, in local language), the known and famous Potala Palace was built on this hill, accommodating the terrain from the base to the highest peak.

It is said to mark the arrival of Princess Wen Cheng of the Tang imperial family, the Tibetan King Sontsa Gampo had built the magnificent palace of a thousand rooms and halls. It was in the seventh century n. e. and appointed him the name that is known today. Later, with the exitinción the Tubo Kingdom, most of the old buildings were destroyed by war. In the seventeenth century when the Qing court granted the Dalai Lama V Ia head of the Tibetan administration, it was he who in 1845 d. N. e. ordered the reconstruction of the palace.
