The islands of San Blas Archipelago are strung along the Caribbean coast of Panama from the Golfo de San Blas nearly to the border with Colombia. San Blas is a series of 378 islands of which only 49 are inhabited by the fierce and independent Kuna Indians. Although it takes only 20 minutes flight from Panama City, a trip to San Blas islands will transport you in the past 20 centuries.

The Kuna Indians, who administered the islands as an autonomous province with minimum interference from the national government, have maintained their own economic system, customs, language and culture, with their distinctive dress, legends, music and dance and have therefore prevented the development of traditional tourism.

The islands’ economy is based on sales of coconuts, fishing and tourism, offering visitors good places for snorkeling and swimming. The facilities are few and simple, so is the food. The area is surrounded by reefs, some of the oldest in the world, and offer wonderful opportunities for snorkeling, the best time is between April and June. Read the rest of this entry »
