In Chinese cooking chopsticks are used as utensils and cutlery to eat solid foods, while soups and other liquids are taken with a spoon with a flat bottom (traditionally made of ceramic). You can see that wooden sticks are giving to wear due to the scarcity of wood and excessive logging in China and East Asia, many Chinese now eat in public with chopsticks made of bamboo or plastic more respect the environment. In the past these sticks were made with more expensive materials such as ivory and silver.
On the other hand, there is sometimes unhygienic habit in some small restaurants to re-use chopsticks. In the majority of Chinese cuisine, food is prepared in small portions (eg vegetables, meat, doufu), to be eaten directly clamped by chopsticks. Chinese culture has traditionally regarded the use of knives and forks on the table as an act “barbaric” because these are covered in the war used as weapons. Read the rest of this entry »
