Urumqi
Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, at the foot of the Tianshan Mountain Range, which stretches north and bathes the river of the same name.
From the Han and Tang recruited people to drive colonization in the region. The city of Urumqi, built in the Qing Dynasty, is an important industrial city in the Pacific Northwest today. South of the city is Yaneruo (Swallow’s Nest), a picturesque area where passengers depart to tour the Tianshan Mountains and watch the desert landscape, or to visit the ancient cities, temples and caves nearby. In the region the traveler will also find a mosaic of customs and traditions of various nationalities make up a population of 12 million.
